Osteopathy - Babies
During birth your baby receives a powerful massage under the rhythmical, compressive forces of uterine contractions. The birth process is very physical! A baby’s soft boned skull is designed to accommodate these forces and to overlap, reducing its size and helping to facilitate its passage through the birth canal. Once born, the effects of compression on your baby’s head (sometimes seen as moulding) are helped to resolve naturally through the actions of crying, sucking and yawning. However if unable to fully unfold from these forces spontaneously your baby may be left with stress and strain and showing signs of physical discomfort. These may manifest as prolonged irritable episodes or distressed crying, digestive discomfort, unsettled sleep, asymmetry or uncomfortable lying position.
Unresolved birth strain may be related to aspects of the pregnancy or delivery itself such as:
- Very long or very quick labour
- Ventouse or forceps delivery
- Back to back or breech in utero/ presentation
- Caesarean section
If you are concerned that your baby is uncomfortable, unsettled or looking unbalanced in head shape or position an osteopathic assessment is advised and will consider all aspects of your child’s health and development.
Babies and children often enjoy osteopathic treatment and can be relaxed and sleep well afterwards. Sometimes they may have a burst of high energy and occasionally can be temporarily unsettled for a while during the 48hour period after treatment.
Osteopathy is a safe and gentle way of releasing tension in babies from birth onwards. It is never too early to treat. Osteopaths consider that unresolved birth strain may be a contributing factor in other problems seen in older children which can manifest particularly during growth spurts.
Physical examination may include checking joint mobility and neurological reflexes as well as a more subtle osteopathic assessment for symmetry and balance in the spine, head and pelvis. Treatment using light touch and very gentle pressure on the head and body is directed at releasing tension and strain and assisting the innate self-healing drive towards health and harmony.
