AVAILABLE FOR HOME VISITS
Lactation Consultants use counselling skills as well as a wide knowledge base to help breastfeeding mothers. During your appointment Sandra will look at the baby and assess him or her physically.
If you are coming to see Sandra with latching issues she may do an oral examination - check the baby's mouth for clues as to why latching is problematic.
It may be important for Sandra to look at the mother's breasts, but she does not normally need to touch the mother in order to help. She will always ask permission before touching either mum or baby.
In order to assess how a breastfeeding problem has occured, it is important to take a history of labour, birth and breastfeeding journey so far. Sandra will offer suggestions to overcome challenges and together you will formulate a care plan to help you achieve your breastfeeding goals.
Some of the issues Sandra can help with are:
- Sore nipples
- Low milk supply
- Slow/static weight gain
- Unsettled baby
- Baby won't latch
- Introducing solids
- Weaning from the breast
- Nursing strikes
- Breastfeeding an older baby
- Toddler feeding
- Tandem feeding
- Breastfeeding twins
- Baby-led bottle feeding
- De-briefing a negative breastfeeding experience
"I believe in breastfeeding. I know that most mothers feel breastfeeding is important, yet many do not have a positive experience. I want to support those women who value the importance of breastfeeding, so that they can feed for as long as they want to. They've been growing their baby on the inside for around 9 months, and I want to help them grow their baby on the outside too!" Sandra Tanner
